About the Amiens Bridge Monument

In September 2019, in response to a proposal from 1 Field Squadron RAE Association, the Amiens City Council, France voted to build a bridge as an access to the Jardin de Plantes (Garden of the Plants). The idea of a bridge is to serve as a monument while providing pedestrian, wheelchair, and bicycle access. It recalls the first day of the Battle of Amiens on 8 August 1918 when Australian Engineers proved crucial to the outcome of the battle.

The bridge has been named “The Bridge of Friendship Between Australia and France” and is the culmination of significant collaboration and support between the Amiens City Council and the 1 Field Squadron RAE Association.

Why an Amiens Bridge to commemorate the Australian Engineers of WW1?

On the 8th of August 1918, in Amiens – France, the Australian Army Engineers (Sappers), demonstrated incredible courage, determination, and initiative under fire. It was the first day of the Battle of Amiens. On that one day, three Australian Sappers were nominated for the Victoria Cross. There were 15 high-level decorations awarded to Australian Army engineers on that day. There were another 13 decorations awarded to Australian Army engineers on 29 September 1918 when they helped to break through the “impregnable” Hindenburg Line. There are memorials to several Australian Army Engineer units as individuals, but nothing to commemorate the Corps of Australian Engineers. “The Bridge of Friendship Between Australia and France” is a monument commemorating the collective efforts of the Australian Engineers of WW1.
